One-Mile Run & Walk
Not every race at the Crim is long. Since 1992, people have had the option to participate in a one-mile run. In 1999, a one-mile fun walk was added.
In 2006, the one-mile run begins at 11:45 a.m. It is sponsored by the Citizens Bank Charitable Foundation. The walk begins five minutes later.
The race provides a challenge for people of all ages. In 2005, a group of preschool students from Forest Hill Montessori in Flint Township ran. The children - ranging in age from 2-6 - began training in the spring and finished the mile at the Crim in about 14 minutes.
In 2005, Helena Kramer, of Davison, crossed the finish line in 6:11 to win her third straight title in the event. She is the second three-time winner in the event's 14-year history. Swartz Creek's Tara Hansen has a record four titles, including three in a row from 1998-2000.
West Bloomfield's David Metler won the 2005 race in 5:20, two seconds ahead of runner-up Bill Monnett of Sterling Heights.
It was fun," Metler said. "I just wish my time was better."
What makes the 2005 West Bloomfield High graduate's triumph more impressive is that he did it on very little sleep. Metler said he normally goes to bed at 1 a.m., but he tried to fall asleep at 11 p.m. Friday night. His brother, Aaron Metler, ran the Crim 10-mile race.
In order to get to Flint on time, the Metlers got up at 4:30 a.m. Saturday. David Metler didn't show any signs of sleep depravation.
“When you go to bed at 11 p.m., you can't do it," Metler said. "Getting extra sleep is hard."
